MEETING OUR EMISSIONS CHALLENGE

To address climate risks Lexus has added ambitious long term challenges to its sustainability agenda. With the NX being available as a PHEV model, as well as HEV and petrol powertrains, it has been designed to meet all lifestyle needs, whilst contributing to a carbon-neutral society.

REDUCING EMISSIONS

The PHEV NX outperforms most of its rivals with its combination of performance and efficiency being the absolute leader in the mid-size SUV luxury category. The plug-in hybrid system used in the PHEV version of the NX is equipped with a thermally-efficient 2.5-litre inline-four engine, a high-capacity, high-output Li-ion battery, and front and rear motors. The CO2 emissions are only 20gr/km and the fuel consumption is 0.9L/100km.

LIFE CYCLE APPROACH

Lexus reduces CO2 emissions in the new NX by taking into account the entire life cycle of a vehicle: from design and production to driving and, finally, the recycling phase. We strive to develop each model so that it delivers the best environmental performance possible. In order to measure the overall environmental impact, detailed life cycle assessments are carried out in accordance with ISO 14040/44.

OPTIMISING RESOURCES

The NX has been crafted to be lean in its use of raw materials, fuel and its impact on the environment. Raw materials are finite so we are constantly trying to find new ways to implement a resource efficient economy. With the use of large-scale shredders, we are able to recycle steel and non-ferrous metals.

IT STARTS AT THE PLANT

Our plant in Japan, Miyata is constantly adopting more environmentally friendly processes. In order to reduce CO2 emissions, active measures such as the implementation of renewables have been added. More specifically, photovoltaic power generation, geothermal energy and hydrogen energy are being utilised with the goal of continuous zero CO2 emissions.

Lexus is also striving to minimise water consumption and contamination. The wastewater activities of our plant have resulted in treated water clean enough for fish to thrive in it.

RESPECT FOR PLANET

Our continuous environmental efforts have grown out of a genuine respect and concern for our planet. Our Miyata plant, where the NX is being manufactured, participates in environmental beautification activities in the region. We are also involved in the national forest programme with volunteers from the company actively engaged in cleanup work.
